Learn the Basics of Blackjack
Blackjack is a card game that is played with one or more 52-card decks. Each card has a value, ranging from 10 for a face card to one or eleven for an ace. The goal of the game is to build up a hand that totals close to 21. Each player is dealt two cards and may choose to take more cards. The dealer must either stand or draw, based on a set of rules.

Essentially, if the dealer has a blackjack hand with a total of twelve, the dealer wins, but the player loses. In this situation, the player may want to consider using the early surrender option to lose half of his or her bet before the dealer checks the hand.
Another important rule to follow when playing blackjack is the dealer’s decision to act. After seeing his or her hand, the player must make a decision to stand, hit, surrender, double down, or split. The dealer is the last one to act and must hit on a hand total of 16 or less. Players can also double down, split, or double down in order to increase their winnings.
In blackjack, the objective is to beat the dealer’s hand. This is achieved by drawing a hand value that is higher than the dealer’s. Ultimately, the objective is to beat the dealer and reduce the house edge to less than one percent. Proper play consists of following a basic strategy, which is a mathematically proven way to determine when to hit or stand.
The basic rules of blackjack remain unchanged from its earliest days. When played with a single deck, players go first. They may also opt to purchase insurance or surrender. Insurance means that the player will get back the amount they bet if the dealer doesn’t have a blackjack. However, players should only buy insurance if the dealer has a face-up card with a 10 or a face.
